What is a "no-sales-tax" state?
Most US states charge a general sales tax on retail purchases. Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon — do not levy a statewide general sales tax. This is why they are often grouped together when developers configure tax tables, checkout flows or regional test cases.
"No statewide sales tax" does not mean "no taxes at all". Alaska allows boroughs and cities to charge their own local sales taxes, so many Alaskan addresses are in fact subject to local sales tax. Delaware has no sales tax for buyers but imposes a gross receipts tax on sellers. Montana has local resort and lodging taxes in some areas, and New Hampshire taxes meals, rooms and rental cars.
Tax rules change over time and depend on the exact location and type of transaction. The information on this page is a simplified overview for software testing, not tax advice.
